Two big conferences mean that Ed and I have been quieter than normal, perhaps the relief of more than a few. But those who are already tired of the family over the long weekend, the marvelous Plimoth Plantation has a nice history of Thanksgiving for you to peruse, if you want to show off over cranberry sauce tonight.

Happy very belated Thanksgiving to everyone. The primary source, in Major Problems I am discussing is “A Proclamation from the Indians of All Tribes, Alcatraz Island, 1969”. The letter written to “The Great White Father and All His People” is meant to be a mockery and expose the truth of what happened to their land and what conditions exist on Indian reservations. Every year on Thanksgiving an event is held on Alcatraz Island called Unthanksgiving Day or The Indigenous Peoples Sunrise Ceremony. The event commemorates the survival of the Indian people following the European arrival to the Americas. It began in 1975 to honor the protest held by the founders of the American Indian Movement who occupied the island in 1969.
