Greetings TUSH.O bloggers and readers!

I’m using this post to introduce myself to the community and give you an idea of what I’ll be posting in the future. I am finishing my PhD in history at Rice University this year, entitled “Fashioning Slavery: Slaves and Clothing in the United States South, 1830–1865.” I also currently serve as the Visiting Assistant Editor at the Journal of Southern History and this semester I am teaching U.S. women’s history to 1865 at Rice.

In the past I’ve taught modern U.S. women’s history, American material culture, and world history at Rice and both halves of the U.S. history survey at Lone Star College. I’ve also worked at a couple of museums. As you’ve probably figured out by now, I love objects and the opportunities material culture studies can bring to the classroom, so a lot of my posts will be about including the stuff of the past in teaching U.S. history.

I look forward to learning and sharing with everyone!
Katie
