I am a PhD candidate in American History at the University of Minnesota. I am interested in the intersections of environment, diplomacy, trade, and warfare in the Atlantic World. My research questions the role of livestock husbandry in the transformation of indigenous Florida during the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries.

I have also been a social studies instructor in Highlands County, Florida since 2017. My biggest thrill in teaching high school students is getting them to think BIGGER. I enjoy finding creative ways to teach American history and exploring pedagogical approaches. I want my students questioning everything.

I am active on twitter, where you can find me at @herberthistory. I am also the creator of Historians At The Movies, in which scholars and others livetweet films every Sunday night at 8pm eastern with the #HATM.
